Kyle B. Usery

Kyle Usrey was born in Wyoming, and grew up in Boulder, Colorado. He was valedictorian of Fairview High School in Boulder as well as a star athlete. He received a BS degree in Economics and Finance, graduating summa cum laude, then went on to obtain an MBA and JD from the University in Colorado, near the top of his class in both those programs. He worked as an executive for GTE in Los Angeles, Washington DC, New York, Wisconsin and Texas, engaged in some complex litigation matters. He worked as a law clerk for two federal judges in Denver, working on major criminal and civil cases – then went on to to work for a Top Ten law firm in Chicago, representing GM, Kraft, Exxon, and NL Industries in complicated multi-party litigation, much of it environmental. He later worked for a general practice law firm in Boulder, doing transactional work as well as debtor and creditor bankruptcy issues. Each of those positions provided Usrey experience in an international business law practice, which became his primary focus for many years. He and his wife were both missionary professors at a major university in China, generating a large amount of business legal work, which spread to other parts of SE Asia, South Asia, Eastern Europe, East Africa, and Australia, including representing some governments in those regions.
He has also had a varied career in academia as professor, director, dean, visiting scholar, vice president, general counsel, and President at a number of universities and colleges throughout the world; he has written a number of published articles and a book on international business law, used on five continents.
Semi-retired, he practices law of all types (business and commercial, real estate, environmental, litigation, wills-trusts and estates, and international) in Colorado and was appointed as a specialized administrative law judge by the governor of Washington; additionally, he’s licensed to practice before the US Tax Court and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, while having been appointed pro hac vice in a number of states in complex litigation cases.
Usrey has been married to Trisa for almost 35 years, and they have a number of adoptive children from China, Eastern Europe and Africa. His major hobby is fly fishing, and he was recently awarded the coveted title of ‘Master Angler’ by the Colorado Division of Fish and Wildlife.
